Lipo Safety

A cautionary tale from Dave ....

This morning I received an unusual phone call from my neighbour to say smoke was escaping from my garage door, fearing the worst I ran to it only to discover the batteries had been charging in preparation for the days flying were fiercely burning away on my charging station with the garage filled with smoke.

Immediately I disconnected the smouldering chargers and threw the stainless steel serving dish containing the largish 4S lipo's connected to my multi port and standalone chargers out the door onto the gravel gaining some minor burns to my hands in the process

There they continued to blaze away with one exploding into flames until I extinguished them and ventilated the garage, fortunately apart from some scorching to the adjacent door frame and a lot of acrid smoke nothing else was harmed, this time I was very lucky although my charge station was specifically constructed to contain such an incident with an insulating upper deck, I suspect one of the older packs had a defective cell that subsequently overcharged and started it off.

The end result of this is I am going to be even more cautious about my charging routine in the future keeping my packs in a heavy ceramic slow cooker pot with a glass lid on top, I already store my packs in army surplus ammo tins and whilst close by, these were unscathed.

Let this be a warning, treat these things with respect they contain a lot of potential energy and as we use them routinely it's easy to become complacent, my incident was only a a short distance away from becoming a total loss.

Steve Warren - Obituary

Steve Warren - Obituary

A much loved and respected quiet powerhouse of the Waltham Chase Aeromodellers and Southern Area BMFA died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday 1st April 2017. His early career as engineering officer in the boiler rooms full of asbestos on cargo vessels had ultimately taken its toll.

Steve was one of the founder members of the Waltham Chase Aeromodellers Club which was formed in 1974 rising to become its president after many stalwart years as secretary.

Although a novice when the club was formed he soon became a leading light organising gliding competitions, teaching beginners, getting bits of club equipment manufactured and generally keeping us in order with the production of immaculate minutes and agendas for the annual meetings. He was selfless in his work for the club and was never afraid to get his hands dirty, he would often spend long hours helping the farmer repair his machinery or help clear the flying fields’ land drains or would be fixing or driving the club mower. Despite his long and tiring daily commute he never failed to offer to drive a few club mates to modelling events and shows around the country at weekends.

His bonnehomme was often tested though when he chaired the boisterous annual local Balsa Brain competition between the Southern Area clubs. He was also a long serving secretary of the Southern Area BMFA and loved to spread the message to modellers by helping to man the BMFA stand at various modelling shows.

His full time career went from strength to strength seeing him as senior executive in the marine, petrochemical and the automotive industries. He travelled and lectured widely and was sometimes delighted on his long haul trips to find that the pilot was one of his friends in the club. There is no doubt his good humour and robust attitude to life won him many friends and he will be very greatly missed.

Swap Meet - Full

SWAPMEET

Waltham Chase Aeromodellers are holding a swapmeet at Waltham Chase Village Hall, Winchester Road, Waltham Chase, Hants, SO32 2LX, on Saturday, 3rd. October 2015 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
Waltham Chase Village Hall is located on the B2177 between Wickham and Bishops Waltham, and is 15 minutes’ drive from Junction 11 on the M3. The village hall has a free car park.

Admission to the swapmeet will be £2.00 for adults, whilst accompanied children will be admitted free.

Tables can be booked for £7 each (to include admission for two people). Please contact Alan Wallington (details below) for table bookings.
Refreshments will be available throughout the event.

This swapmeet is the ideal opportunity for modellers to dispose of unwanted kits, models, engines and all kinds of modelling equipment, raising some cash in the process for the purchase of more urgently required items. For those looking to spend some money, this could provide the opportunity of locating that sought after kit, or perhaps a much needed engine at a bargain price, or maybe a finished model to fly during the winter.

Flitehook, who stock a large range of general aeromodelling products, are expected to be in attendance.

For further details please contact:  Alan Wallington, “Wrenbeck”, Bull Lane, Waltham Chase, Southampton, Hants. (Tel. 01489 895157/07811 302612 or e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)
